Business Rates will be transformed in 2017 if the Chancellor’s proposals go through as indicated.

Local authorities will once again have revenue-raising control in their patch and the uniform business rate (the multiplier of rateable value) will be swept away… new rateable values will be set by the Valuation Officers once again?... and major local differences in rates bills for similar buildings in neighbouring patches could return – remember Brent at nearly £4.00 in the £ multiplier and Kensington and Chelsea at only £1.22, in the last year (1990) of the old system? Will there be an outbreak of red v. blue financial politics in the capital once again? What about the return of domestic rates in a reversal of the council tax system?
