Naturally ventilated spaces are one of the reasons why a Manchester sixth form building has secured a Breeam Excellent rating

Facilities management of one sixth form may want to build on its green credentials, after it has achieved Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (Breeam) Excellent.

Loreto Sixth Form College in Manchester's Ellis and Kennedy building was majority funded by the Learning Skills Council on the premise that it would meet a minimum of Breeam Very Good.

Targets for low-carbon technologies and carbon dioxide reductions have all been exceeded, something which could assist with more environmentally-friendly facilities management.

Spaces are naturally ventilated, there is solar-control glass and local controls for lighting and heating.

Carol Atkinson, Bre global chief executive, said: "This building has comprehensively demonstrated its remarkable environmental credentials, whilst also providing an excellent learning resource centre, ICT facilities and a library for the students and staff."

Among the areas that Bre works in, it strives to reduce the environmental impact of businesses, communities and buildings from the planning stages through to end-of-life disposal.
