Planning and development of cities in the future should incorporate environmental sustainability into its vision, according to Rics.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) has unveiled its blueprint for the future planning and development of cities across the world.

Vision for Cities was launched at an international real estate conference in Cannes. In it, Rics believed nine key principles must be adhered to by developers and planners in the future.

Amongst those principles, the vision states that environmental sustainability "must be at the heart of the planning and delivery of long-term infrastructure", as it was tied to economic and social outcomes.

The institution also called upon cities to develop long-term visions of its cities - and the future of their urban settlements - that were not affected by political or electoral upheaval.

In London, there are major projects currently taking place such as the continued development of the Olympic Park in Stratford.

Over the next year, Rics plans to draw on the expertise of some of its 100,000 members across 140 countries as it considers commissioning research on some of the key issues raised by its vision.
