Planning and development is underway to revamp the appearance of one of London's most iconic landmarks.

Westminster City Council unveiled the £14 million plans at a meeting last night, which will see Piccadilly Circus returned to the appearance that it had in 1960.

The plans will see the one-way system removed along with guard railings in the area and an increased amount of space devoted to pedestrians.

Councillor Colin Barrow, Westminster City Council's leader, said: "This is an iconic landmark and it deserves a setting all Londoners can be proud of and enjoy visiting."

He added that with the world's attention on the capital in 2012, the plans will ensure visitors are impressed by the city's streets and all they have to offer.

Transport for London has been applied to with the hope that it will provide £7 million of funding for the changes, which are part of its Major Schemes project.

It has recently been reported that Pepsi has agreed a new business space leasing deal with Aviva Investors at its 37,000-sq-ft building at Arlington Business Park in Theale, Berkshire.
