Planning and development of Brent Cricklewood area moves step closer

Planning and development in north London could create 7,500 new homes and better transport links with city centre

By Ashley Brunskill

London mayor Boris Johnson has approved a £4.5 billion planning and development project to rejuvenate part of north London.

The plans include 7,500 new homes, a substantial expansion of the 800,000 sq ft Brent Cross shopping centre and a new train station to give the area better transport links into the centre of London.

After being approved by Mr Johnson's office, they must now be approved by the government - although some local residents are seeking a public inquiry.

Development director Jonathan Joseph knows that local authority approval is only the first step and suggests the scheme will have local residents as its priority.

He told Times Series: "There is a long, hard road ahead. We want to use the few years that necessarily come between planning permission and starting on site to build on our work and put the regeneration scheme at the centre of the community."

In addition to some of the new features, £1 billion of the project's funding will be used to revamp the local road network, refurbish schools in the area and, according to hints from Mr Joseph, to redevelop Hendon Football Club.
