Govt needs to take the lead on efficiency

The government needs to take the lead on buildings efficiency, it has been claimed.

It is important that the government sets a strong example in sustainable building design to encourage businesses to follow suit, Morgan Lovell has claimed.

Comments from the group follow the publication of a report showing that the government is falling behind in meeting its own emissions reduction standards.

Speaking at the end of last week, Lara Conaway, the company's sustainability manager, said that when it comes to corporate real estate, most firms are commonly only aware of one or two tenets of sustainable office design.

Cost reduction is normally the key driver, she said, adding that Whitehall needs to do more to promote green awareness.

"Unless [the government] shows businesses the way, it gives everyone an excuse to opt out," Ms Conaway warned.

In the recent report, published by the Sustainable Development Committee, it was revealed that the government is on target with most emission reduction targets but behind schedule in lowering the carbon footprint of its offices.
