Businesses have been told that they should put measures in place to prevent squatters.
Businesses have been told to ensure that they have the right level of measures in place to prevent squatters from occupying their premises.
The problem has been increased by the economic downturn as buildings remain empty. Therefore companies may want to ensure that their facilities management measures are adequate.
Underwriting manager for Aviva Mike Colmans suggested it can take time and cost money for landlords to go to court to obtain interim possession orders.
He advised more obvious measures must also be considered, such as making sure that all water, gas and electricity supplies are turned off at the mains and, wherever possible, chaining and padlocking isolation valves.
"Perimeter fencing should be erected and overall security should be assessed. Property owners should consider hiring security guards, installing extra lighting and generally improving locks, grilles, CCTV and alarms," he stated.
It has recently been announced that planning and development is underway for a 25-storey student hall of residence next to Arsenal Football Club's Emirates Stadium.
