The Land Registry is to axe 1,500 jobs and close five offices, it has been reported.
Offices in Peterborough, Portsmouth, Croydon, Stevenage and Tunbridge Wells are set to close and some staff at other locations will also lose jobs.
Land Registry chief executive Peter Collis said: "The proposed closure of offices will be very unwelcome news for our staff and we are determined to do all we can to ameliorate the impact on our exceptionally loyal, dedicated and hardworking workforce."
People involved in the corporate real estate market will know that the Land Registry records and guarantees title ownership of residential and commercial property in England and Wales.
Before the cuts 6,500 staff were employed by the company.
Mr Collis added that the changes were necessary to the future of the organisation and that it will save £500 million over ten years.
The Land Registry states that its aim is to enable confident dealings in property and security of title by providing ready access to up-to-date and guaranteed land information.
