Holyhead Chamber of Trade has petitioned to save businesses in the town

By Ashley Brunskill

A local chamber of trade petitioned in the streets of Holyhead last week to try and save the future of businesses in the area.

Business rates and other expenses have contributed to the closure of shops, according to members of the Holyhead Chamber of Trade.

Sue Williams, chair of the chamber and also owner of the town's Gateway Restaurant, said the organisation wants to help current companies survive, as well as attract new ones to the port town.

However, the April rise in business rates is expected to impact upon the area.

Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Anglesey Anthony Ridge-Newman told the Holyhead and Anglesey Mail: "Businesses are trying to recover from the deepest and darkest recession since the war, only to be hit with a rate increase at a delicate time."

The business rates for companies in Wales are outlined by the Welsh Assembly Government, which sets the multiplier and changes it every year in line with inflation.
