Small firms across Trafford are being encouraged to apply for business rate relief as part of a new campaign designed to ease the strain on companies during this difficult period.

According to the Trafford Messenger, some 1,400 local businesses are eligible to apply for help in getting business rates paid under the relief scheme, with some in line to save as much as 50 per cent by doing so.

Executive councillor John Tolhurst said that it was important for businesses to take advantage of the programme, particularly during this period of considerable economic adversity.

"We think there may be some small businesses in Trafford that are not claiming their entitlement to small business rate relief. I would urge them to complete the application form," Mr Tolhurst advised.

The need to seek relief may become more pertinent in the coming year as recent government proposals to increase business rates by five per cent come into effect in April 2009.
