TUC: UK needs more green investment
Thursday, July 30, 2009
Government called on to boost the nation's green technology.
In order to become a world leader in climate change, the UK government needs to invest more in green technology, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
The TUC has suggested that more can be done to bring the UK up to speed with other European countries such as Spain and Germany, which produce large amounts of wind and solar power.
TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said: "Whilst the UK is lagging behind many of our European neighbours in embracing green technology, the UK has a world class manufacturing base to build on.
"By investing heavily and regulating in favour of green technology, the government can turn the UK into a world leader and create over a million skilled jobs."
By 2020 the UK Low Carbon Transition Plan aims to have more than 1.2 million people in green employment.
The Carbon Salary Survey published last month found that 37 per cent of those working in climate change in the UK were not British citizens.
