The Mayor of London has unveiled plans to completely regenerate the capital's Nine Elms area and provide new homes and jobs for the district.
Boris Johnson revealed how this development would deliver green spaces, 16,000 homes and up to 25,000 jobs to what is currently 195 hectares of derelict or underused land running between Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station.
Key to the plan's success is the proposed extension of the Northern Line, which would be financed through levying contributions from commercial property developments in the area that would benefit from the regeneration.
Mr Johnson vowed that "this neglected area, which for years has failed to fulfil its potential and is disconnected from surrounding neighbourhoods, will become a thriving new quarter for living, leisure and business and an easily accessible destination for Londoners and visitors".
Also integral to the scheme is the relocation of the US Embassy to Nine Elms from its current Mayfair base, which was announced last October, with Wandsworth Borough Council last month granting planning permission for its proposed new premises in the district.
